White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout (Review)

18006096.jpgSummary: One kiss could be the last

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she’s anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she’s crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she’s not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn’t an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she’s the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

Cover: I find this cover to be incredibly cheesy and I wish that there weren’t models on the cover of J. L. Armentrout’s books.

My thoughts: White Hot Kiss is a story about a girl named Layla who is half gargoyle (called Wardens) and half demon. She has a special ability where she can suck souls out of people simply by attempting to kiss them. Along with that ability, she also is able to identify demons unlike other Wardens. Without her parents, she lives with a family of Wardens where she has to tag demons for the Wardens to hunt down. One Warden she lives with is a guy named Zayne, who she has cared for and crushed on for years on hand, but she knows she can’t make a move on him because of her soul sucking ability.

One day Layla meets a captivating demon named Roth who is bad news that she simply can’t ignore. They immediately form a connection Layla could never have with Zayne thanks to the fact that Roth has no soul to lose by kissing Layla. But along with this twisted relationship comes rivalries and secrets that unfold thanks to Layla’s new alliance with a sinful demon.

I am such a huge fan of Jennifer L. Armentrout books. All her stories have unique plot lines and characters that find a place in my heart for a long time. The fact that she created a story about gargoyles, no less, made me eager to pick up this book, and I flew right through it. The moment I began reading about Layla, Roth, and Zayne, I stayed up late into the nights to find out what was going to happen next. Not only does Armentrout write incredible chemistry between characters, but she also builds this world that is simplistic but impacting enough to keep readers interested.

The problems Layla and Roth faced together were so entertaining to read about, and I couldn’t wait to see what other dilemmas they faced to save the world. I was obsessed with their banter between each other that made me instantly root for them to be together. Both Layla and Roth were so snarky and comical with their dialogue that made me feel as though I friends with them for years. All the characters in this novel were so well written and each had secrets that unraveled in a nice pace Armentrout set throughout the entire plot. I couldn’t stop thinking about Layla and her unfolding powers she had to use to help save the world along with her conflicted feelings she had towards both demons and Wardens.

Not only is this book action packed, swoonful, and outright addicting to read, but it ended in such a way that left me wishing I had the sequel. I was so entertained by this read that I actually went out the next day to buy the sequel that I absolutely cannot wait to binge read. I highly recommend this novel because it will not leave you disappointed. It has plot twists, a heated love triangle, and a supernatural element that will attract all kinds of readers to this story.
